Uruguay has so many pristine beaches along the Atlantic. It's just the right place for a bum like me. As long as you as aware of your surroundings and are cautious with yourself and your possessions, you can summer on the beach everywhere you go.

I "summer" and "winter" on the beach by sitting on my baloncy.

Perfect! That's totally what I would do too. Where is your balcony? Are you right on the beach? I'd love a house overlooking the ocean.

My balcony is across the Rambla (the blvd that goes along the beach) from the beach. We pay US$450/mo for a furnished 2 bedroom condo overlooking the beach.

Technically the beach we overlook is the Rio Plata (river), however it is more like the Ocean has it is salty water with waves, a tide and you can't see the other side (Argentina). Officially the dividing line between the River and the Ocean is 80 km north in Punta del Este.

Here is a photo from our balcony looking more or less north. You can see there are plenty of condos overlooking the beach... I think they start at about US$450/mo to rent and around US$80, 000 to US$400, 000 to purchase.

Here is the sunrise around 7am on a quiet Sunday morning just before the sirens of Bush's motorcade destroy the usually tranquil place.

Looking the other way... you can't see them, but the street is lined with 10 story apartment buildings... though the street is completely empty for Bush's trip to the airpory, there are rarely traffic jams here.

You can take a 3 hr walk down the beach here to read the Cuidad Viejo and Centro areas of town.

Bush is on his way to the airport... finally all the sirens and helicopter noise will be gone and the neighborhood will be quiet again.

Hopefully his trip did some good for the country.

Lee, those pictures are absolutely gorgeous. If that was my view, I don't think I'd ever get anything done. DH and I once used a mortgage broker whose office was on Coast Highway. I loved going there, but since his desk faced the water I always wondered how he worked. And I had a doctor whom I had to drive down Coast Highway to get to. Loved that drive.

Here is a great walk (or bike ride) along the beach... you can walk for hours. (Contrary to the US Embassy warnings) I would consider it very safe to walk along the Rambla.

I love walking on the beach. It is so peaceful. Can you, or do people typically, ride your bicycle along the beach? I don't mean on the sand, but along it. Anything near the water is so nice.
