Education through Hunhu/ Ubuntu.Tody's school Leavers tend to exhibit lots of skills and knowledge but they lack the desired qualities and morals to fit them in Society. We tend to see lots of graduands who have bookish knowledge but cannot display such qualities as in uprightness, honesty, truthfulness, chastity and hospitality. This is because the philosophy espoused by most post Colonial educational systems emphasises values and ethics which are alien to them.
The Philosophy of Hunhu/ Ubuntu as emphasised by Samkange and Samkange looks at an African and his rootedness in an ongoing Community. His Communal approach to issues is quite an attractive alternative to the selfish tendencies and supreme individualism emphasised by western Philosophies of Education.
Respect for Elders which lacks in the newly educated graduands seems to be working against them as these elders are simply dying without passing on the wealth of knowledge that they possess. Such information is vital in unlocking the mysteries in such incurable ailments as in the HIV scourge.
Therefore the ball is in our court. It is us who can decide whether to overhaul our Philosophies of education to produce a 100% useful citizen or maintain the status quo and continue to produce manpower for the West.
